Getting started

CamRelay needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later on both Macs.

1. Install CamRelay in /Applications on both Macs.
2. On the Mac with the camera, choose Share this Mac’s camera and allow camera access.
3. On the other Mac, choose Use a remote camera, add CamRelay Camera, and approve it in System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions.
4. Pair the two Macs with the 8-character code shown on the camera Mac. Enter it within 2 minutes.
5. In your meeting app, pick CamRelay Camera as the camera. If it does not appear, restart the meeting app.

Microphone

CamRelay plays the remote microphone into BlackHole, a free virtual audio driver from existential.audio. Install it on the Mac that receives the camera:

brew install --cask blackhole-2ch

or download it from the BlackHole site. Then, in the meeting app, choose BlackHole 2ch as the microphone.

Common questions

CamRelay Camera is not in my app’s camera list

CamRelay must be in /Applications on that Mac, and the camera extension must be approved in System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions. Then restart the meeting app. Apps only look for cameras when they launch.

How do I connect across different networks?

On the same local network, your other Mac is found automatically. Across the internet, type its host name or IP address instead — for example the address Tailscale gives it. The Macs still pair with the code and are encrypted the same way.

Is it encrypted?

Yes. Every connection uses fresh keys, and all control, video and audio are encrypted end to end with AES-GCM. Video and audio go directly from Mac to Mac.

What does CamRelay Pro include?

Pro removes the CamRelay.app frame from the picture and unlocks Picture settings: MetalFX upscaling up to 4K, noise reduction (macOS 26 or later), zoom, pan, flip, brightness, contrast, saturation and warmth. Everything else works in the free app. Pro Yearly is $1.99/year and Pro Lifetime is $9.99 one-time, in USD and possibly different by region.

How do I restore my purchase?

Open the app’s CamRelay Pro page and choose Restore Purchases. Make sure you are signed in to the Apple Account that made the purchase.

How do I cancel the yearly plan?

Open the App Store, click your account, then Subscriptions, and choose CamRelay. If you bought Pro Lifetime after Pro Yearly, cancel Pro Yearly so it does not renew. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
